Byzantine emperor Romanus I Lacapenus ruled completely within the reign of Constantine VII in the early-mid 10th century. Though a pretty obscure figure, he saved the empire from Bulgarian invasion and made a pretty ominous figure on a coin. Constantine VII managed to oust Romanus I and his co-emperor sons, leaving Romanus I with no real extended lineage in the empire.
