From an uncleaned lot. Coin of Elagabalus (I suspect). 19.5 mm 2.39 gm

Any idea what city minted this? Any reference number?? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, that's going to be tough. It's Caracalla or Elagabalus since you can see ANTΩNI on the obverse. Can you give a guess for the reverse letters?

On Wildwinds, try using "find on page" while searching both of those emperors, using search terms "standing left", or "Apollo standing left", or "Hermes standing left" (my best guess for the depicted deity). All databases are deficient in provincials, so some luck will be needed. Sometimes I start with Wildwinds and if I find something similar, search again on CNG and acsearch, using the city issuing the similar coin.

Thanks. That's helpful. The only thing I can clearly make out on the reverse appears to be CICΩ (?) from about the 10:00 to the 11:00 position. Does this combination of letters mean anything to anyone.

The portrait looks more like Elagabalus than Caracalla, but the latter is also possible.

Thanks for offering Hermes as a suggestion, too!

I'm having a horrible time accessing Wildwinds today and don't know how to change my settings to allow it to come up.

    @Roman Collector,

Here's how to fix your Wildwinds problem. The steps are for a Mac, but you can probably figure out where to go to change the DNS settings if you have a PC (or go the Forvm link cited below for detailed PC instructions).

    Network > Advanced > DNS

Click "+" to add IPv4 or IPv6 addresses
    Type 8.8.8.8
    Click the "+" again
    Type 8.8.4.4
Click apply or OK or whatever to make the changes stick

    ...

More details about the issue and its solution can be found in this Forvm thread.

Most websites load faster for me now and I have no Wildwinds access problems, so I'm glad I made the change.

While the reverse figure looks good, I don't think the OP coin's letters can be made to fit that city.

I'm still looking... I love a good hunt (any excuse to avoid other chores, really :D)

It may not be that city, but like RC I believe it to be Elagabalus

Hmm. I give up (for now).

In Wildwinds and CoinProject I tried every permutation of possible letter matches for the last three or four visible letters (reverse), using "find on page" for both Elagabalus and Caracalla. No luck finding a likely city, much less a reverse match. I even started looking at Diadumenian (some of his coins show his name as Antoninus) until I realized the OP coin was laureate .
