I know very little when it comes to ancients. Please I would like some history and or info on this coin if you could find the time. Thanks Tom
Tom, Same coin and story as in this post from 3 days ago except yours at least looks like the real thing.NICE! http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=20281
This is what I think it is off of the list you gave me. Thompson 45 Kingdom of Thrace, Lysimachos AR Tetradrachm. Lampsakos mint, 297-281 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right / BASILEWS LYSIMAXOY, Athena Nikephoros seated left; HP monogram to inner left, star on throne What do you think mikjo0
I think it's a good match.Good job there sir. As for your questions about grade and value.Go to the Wildwinds page I linked and go to similar coins and click the "text" link. This will give you a general idea how much people are asking and paying for them. Here is the page that pops up for Thompson 45.The estimate is $750 and was sold for $862.50 but it's in really great condition. If the coin in your picture belongs to you,I'd have to say $350-500 at least. The reason this Alexander type is so pricey is that these were the very first coins issued with his portrait. All later coins carried a different reverse with Zeus sitting on a throne. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/thrace/kings/lysimachos/Thompson_045.txt
Sir you wouldn't believe what I paid for it either!! The guy I bought it from called it Roman Crap. I thought it was the neatest thing I have seen. Thanks for your information. My real love is Lincoln Cents and Indian Cents so I may have to sell this coin to help with my collection. Tom
Miko , I made a mistake this coin looks more like the Thompson 43.1 variety. My coin has a torch in front of the throne and the wings of nikephorous are pointing upwards. What are your thoughts. How would I go about selling this coin if it is rare?
Looks like you've nailed it.I didn't see the torch at first because that are is so dark on your coin.I don't see any significant differences between your coin and Thompson 43.1. I can't help you with ideas on selling it because I've never sold one of mine.Maybe one of the other members can tell you from experience.
