This was in a large collection of gold coins (mostly USA) left by my father. The USA coins were easy to identify, and figure out which were worth sending away for grading. This one not so much ! Any ideas would be appreciated...

That's a gold solidus of Valentinian II. It should weigh about 4.5 g.

The obverse inscription reads D N VALENTINIANVS IVN P F AVG. It was minted at the Trier mint in AD 377-380. See, for example, RIC ix, p. 24, 49c.

As far as Roman gold coins go, that's a common one. Still worth sending in to NGC Ancients to get slabbed.

Nice coin. Worth is subjective, but my guess is north of $12-1500. Just a guess on my part since I do lot collect late Roman Imperials.

Slabbing it imo is a waste of money unless you're going to sell it on ebay
