I am going round in circles trying to nail this one down - any expert out there able to give me a steer? (I know it is no great shakes, but I hate to be beaten when I feel it should be identifiable.)

Legend seems to start Imp Caes - but after that I can't make it fit anyone. I have been looking in the Caracalla/Geta/Elagabalus area. Reverse appears to be PMTRP Cos III.

    Thanks!

    Needs cleaning.

Looks like trajan but could be hadrian. Try one of them.

Thanks for that Mat - Hadrian looks the more likely - Seaby legend E. Bust type f? Any idea which reverse?

I know it needs cleaning - I want to see if it is going to be worth the effort! :)

Looks like "Pietas standing front, head turned right with both hands raised. "

I agree with Hadrian. At first I also thought Trajan, but saw the back of the neck and changed my opinion to Hadrian.

As to whether its worth it, that coin used to be a $20 coin, but I bet you most dealers, (cleaned up), are asking $50 today.

Thanks both - I think I have it now at Seaby 1116 - about the only one where Pietas faces right. Definitely Hadrian not Trajan - the face (beneath the corrosion) is too young!

I have a friend who collects and enjoys cleaning and restoring - she does a lot of metal detecting here in the UK so she has lots to work on - but she likes me to do the ID first!

    Thanks again,

    Paddy
