I'm also working on how to read Roman coins..It appears that the name of the person, status, mint etc..all stated on the coin..Can someone show me on this particular coin how it's read? Thanks
That is Trajan, he has the longest legends of all the Roman emperors. I have great difficulty in reading some legends. I usually know the emperor, then I go to wildwinds to match the reverse and go from there! I used to have a link on reading legends I will try and find it for you.
You will find these sites helpful http://www.wnccoins.com/0022.htm http://cointranslator.com/ http://romancoin.info/ http://esty.ancients.info/numis/legends.html
I think this may be a match....and the legends are spelled out. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3133260
Doug has a page you may find helpful for understanding legends on Roman Imperial coins: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/abb.html
@Pishpash Thank you for linking to my website (WNCCOINS), I am glad that even after all these years people are using that page!
I hope that in the near future we can have picture search system..Google have primitive version..This would solve many problems..Technology..
@TIF Thank you. I have been working on expanding it, but it may be a while before I am ready to share some of the additions I am making. When I do, the fine folks here at CT will certainly be first to know!
Kirk, do you mean finding coins with image searching similar to facial recognition programs? That would be great, wouldn't it There is a company (Ex-Numis) doing a version of that in a limited way-- they search old catalogs for prior sales, enhancing the value of a coin by finding lost provenance. I submitted a few of my better coins but had no luck. Others on this forum had success. It's an interesting idea.
