Can someone please help ID this Roman bronze coin? It's really hard for me to tell due to the wear. It was purchased a long, long time ago at a coin shop. It's about 16mm in diameter and it's believed to be from around 100-400 AD. Thanks in advance!
Its a Fallen Horseman Fel Temp Reparatio coin, here is an article by Doug Smith on these.. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/ftr.html
Thanks! Judging by the size of the shield on the reverse, I believe it's this variety below from the link that you provided. Or, does it look like something else? There's too much wear for me to tell the MM though. It also looks like the very first coin from that link, too.
To me it looks like an FH3 reaching but with that much wear, exact ID is unlikely. If we do not care enough when photographing a coin to take it out of a holder, help i not likely. The glare is where the mintmark would be.
It's probably the most common of all Roman types. You can do much better, grade-wise, for very little money. If I were you, I'd set my sights a little higher when it comes to the common types. Incidentally, this the first type of ancient coin I collected - which sucked me into this endlessly fascinating realm. And Doug's page on these is the first bit of analysis I read as well.
This one? I think the tail end of the bust's hair looks like tassels flailing around like the AE2 one. Unless the FH3 also has that type hair for the reaching one, too?
Yeah this was a very old acquisition, maybe 15-20 years ago. I lost track of it until I recently wanted to look it up. I'll probably look to purchase silver ancients for my future acquisitions.
@iPen Yeah, it is not a modern mint-state coin that can't be touched. Its OK to take it out and hold it.
Don't just overlook the bronzes. There are some fascinating bronze coins much like the one in this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/are-we-tired-of-nemausus-dupondii-yet.275407/
