5 baht coin from Thailand. Don't know Thai so can't read the year, lol, but as I recall that type has been minted from about the mid 1980's to the present. Got quite a few of these as well as other denominations when I visited Thailand in January 2001. Last I checked there were about 40 bahts to the US dollar, making that coin worth about 13 cents. Not that good a deal if you paid 25 cents for it, lol, but the novelty makes up for it if you didn't have one before I guess. Good find in US circulation!

As to how it got in a roll of US quarters, no clue, lol... but wouldn't be the first time foreign coins managed to sneak into US circulation. Have quite a few coins in my world coin collection that I acquired that way. Probably the records for longest travel distance would be a 20 sen coin from Malaysia (mistaken for a quarter) and a 10 cent coin from Singapore that made it to where I work as a cashier. Have received coins from Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Bermuda, Jamaica, East Caribbean States, etc. that got mistaken for US coinage and ended up in circulation. Always an exciting find for me!

I could be wrong here, but the writing looks Thai (I should know, I eat the food enough), and the guy's face looks like someone I've seen in posters at various Thai restaurants. Add in the fairly distinctive-looking building on the back, and I'm thinking your coin came from the same country my lunch did.

But like I said, I could be wrong.

That specific variety (Y#219) has been minted since BE2531 (1988). it's similar to US clad coinage with a copper core and cu-ni outsides.

My 2006 Krause only gives the mintage through 2000. The only value Krause gives is 50 cents for uncirculated examples, regardless of year.

Rama IX, aka Phra Maha Bhumithol Adulyadej ascended the throne in 1946 and is now one of the longest serving monarchs in the world, and may even be the longest. If he makes it another 4 years he will pass Japanese Emperor Hirohito's record-setting reign.. (His effigies began wearing glasses in the early '70s.)

Even with the help of the chart in Krause, I'm very poor at dating Thai coins. Their BE dates are converted to the Gregorian calendar by subtracting 543.

That edge is actually round, with a nine-sided polygon border, but in BE2515 (1972) Y#98 was issued with an actual nine-sided edge.

Nope, I don't have this one in my collection. I will keep it though. It is a bit thicker than the quarter, but the same size as it. I don't have a Thai coin so it will be checked in as a foreign. Neat find though.

My bank did receive the new Colorado D quarter today. I went by there to pick up a roll around 1:30 and they told me to come back by in a half hour and their delivery woud be there by then. Now I need a CO. P!

    Looks like BE2537 that's 1994.

Don't feel bad about not being good at dating the coins even using the chart. The digits as they appear on the coins really don't look much like the figures as they are shown in Krause.
