What would I have the best luck with finding something neat? Pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters? I'm going to stop off at the bank tomorrow and buy a few rolls of atleast two different coins. Not sure what to choose though :/
I would go with cents. You can find plenty of pre-1982 copper, and I often find a good number of wheats per $25 box as well. Keep your eye out for some varieties too (1995 DDO, 1998-2000WAM, etc.). TC
Personally, I usually go through pennies and nickels for my dansco albums. I typically find about 2 war nickels per $100 of nickels. War nickels are 35% silver, they're 1942-1945, the government needed the nickel for military supplies, so instead of using nickel, they used silver. you can tell them by looking on the back and the mint mark (P, D, S) is on the reverse above building. Not all 1942 nickels are 35% silver though! All silver nickels have the huge mint mark on the reverse. With pennies you can find wheat cents, double dies, or AM varieties (92(very rare), 92-D close am or 96, 98, 99, 00 wide am) Here is a website to help you identify wide/close AM varieties http://www.lincolncentresource.com/wideams.html Like I said, I go through cents and nickels because I'm working on a dansco album for each of them, the war nickels are an added bonus on top of that. Dimes and quarters, anything pre-1964 is pretty much the only things to pull out of those since they are 90% silver, you may have came across this site before, but to see the current prices US silver coins at http://coinflation.com/ If you're lucky, you can find silver in half dollars, I haven't been too lucky with that, I've only found one 40% half in about $1300 worth, but I've seen some people have a ton of luck on here with them. The coolest thing I've found while roll searching (I'm still pretty new though!) is a 1999 wide am, which is out being certified right now. Hopefully something in there helped! If not, I'm sure other members will chime in later!
Back in late March I bought $340 worth of halves at my credit union. The search resulted in 59 40% halves and 9 90% halves as well as 10 or 11 proofs. At the time the melt value on just those halves was $350 which resulted in an enormous profit. the next time I search $320 worth and turned up naught. You can find silver in nickels, the 1942-45 nickels have $2 worth of silver in them. I also found 7 Buffalos in my Fed bag search on Monday.
I'm not trying to be nosy, but how much cash will you be taking with you? Are you hoping to find silver, varieties & errors or all three? Chris
Nickels will give you the most foreign coins if you like oddities, also a chance for silver, and you can actually complete a set from circulation (hard but doable). Cents are cool because you will almost always find a wheat in a box, and they are cheap to search.
