That's incredible bad luck, BLS! That is such a long streak, I have to ask these questions, where in CA do you live? And please forgive this next one, but you do know that any half prior to 1971 contains silver, right? I ask that because some are not aware of the 40% silvers from 1965-1970. Anyways, I wish you the best!

Sounds like you need to move to a different denomination since halves are picked clean in your area. Are you sure you aren't getting your dumps back?

Oops, I missed you post on silver halves BLS. Sorry about that!

Given the lack of silver halves in boxes in LA I get the impression the coin couriers there may be equipped with modern coin sorting and rolling equipment that rejects silver.

Is it? If it's a hobby, you can't really count time as an expense, and the dollar cost is basically zero -- you spend $500 for a box that contains $500.

As you've found, though, it's a lousy job, at least in terms of earnings per hour (often zero, probably never as high as minimum wage even for the most productive searchers).

Also to berto's post, I live in Southern California, Burbank. I guess they do have newer machine to sort out?! I am moving out of here anyway! When I really start the moving process, I won't go by flight, I will go on the road to North Carolina. So I will be going to every bank during moving week :) I was doing Quarters and I found 1951 coin out of 9 boxes, and I regret not checking for W's because I didn't like the new version of Washington Quarters after 1999. Because of that, I quit and went back on halves and it's addicting. I *blame* this board for trying to get the 'win' LOL.

Chase & Wells Fargos are weird with denomination, though. They're happy to accommodate for my Quarter needs but when it comes to halves, they are like different people, like they were about to throw a fit. And one of those tellers were unprofessional (I understand) and told me, "Do not dump this (expletive) back to us." :p

Stopped by a bank after my son’s doctor appt. Teller had $11.50 in loose halves. I was more than happy to take them off her hands and add this shiny boy to the hoard.

There is quite a bit you can search for with halves. You have a good amount of DDOs, DDRs, and RPMs you can search for. Here's what clad Kennedy halves have to offer:
    • DDOs: 1971-1972, 1971D-1977D, 1980P, 1984P
    • DDRs: 1971-1973, 1971D-1972D, 1974D
    • RPMs: 1971D-1973D, 1984D, 1989D
Of course you have the no FG to look for and if you want to be the first to discover a transitional variety, you can always check transitional years which would be: 1970/1971, 1984/1985, 1987/1988, 1990/1991, and 2008/2009.

Probably none of it is going to make you rich, but it's fun and helps to train the eye.

On a 7 box half dollar skunk streak. I have two more boxes in hand to search, but nary an ender. Thankfully, in the middle of that I bought two partial bags off of counting machines and bagged 2 x 90%ers and 3 x 40%ers. The Christmas silver has still not shown up here. :yack:

One of my favorite vault tellers sets aside foreign coins for me. Yesterday she had a steelie to go along with others. I like the Colombia 50 pesos with the bear on the reverse.

Will be stepping out of the coin roll hunting for awhile because of medical issues. But I will be still looking to see all of the goodies everyone is finding!
