I have a chance to acquire a roll of 20-1996 Silver Eagle's. My neighbor, who isn't really a coin collector, bought these back in 1996 by chance and has held onto them for all this time. He knows that I collect coins and recently saw the release of the new $50 gold Buffalo and he really wants one. He really doesn't want to spend the money on the Buffalo as he has some collateral to trade with. The 1996 Silver Eagle is the key date for the series and finding an original roll in MS is even rarer. These coins generally have a value around $40 each in average MS grades. I dont own a $50 Buffalo now, but I would get one if this deal seems good enough.

My question is, should I spend the money to buy the $50 Buffalo for the 20-1996 SE's? I have been collecting SE's for a little while now and this/ these would be a great addition to the collection.

Come on gang, give me some feedback.

    Thanks

Does he want the Uncirculated Buffalo or does he want the Proof Buffalo?

If he wants the Unc Buffalo, then I would say trade. The price of 1996 Silver Eagles is about what you stated and will probably increase in the future.

If he wants the Proof Buffalo, well, it's your call. The price of the Proof Buffalo is about what the roll of Silver Eagles goes for.

I think around here 1996 ASE sell for about $32 each....so that would be $640 for a roll....isn't a Buff Comm $800??...if that is the case I would try to buy the roll of of him......

Those prices for the 96 sound a bit low guys. Around here you can't get one for less than $45 and ebay has them going for at least $50 and it looks like many are going for around $60.

If you like the silver eagles better and the price is about even, i'd trade. I agree with Uncle Herbie, 96 silver eagles in UNC go for at least 45-50.

I do need to converse with my neighbor the MS/PF factor.

So far, sounds like a lot of positives on the trade. I'll let this run till Friday until I make a decision.

Why the middleman (you)? He could just sell/trade them at a dealer and get the Buff :rolling:

Added: Unless you want a roll of SAE's, of course.

That roll would be a cooler thing to have (long term) I'd say if you got the cash to get the Buffalo then do it. Any key is a cool thing to have especially in quantities.

I would get the Eagles. I feel their value has not reached its peak. I bought one to complete my set and paid round 30.00 almost 2 years ago. I wish I had bought a roll then.

The more collectors join in putting sets together the value that one coin will bring.

I think I'd vote to own the buffalo in this case. I'm not convinced that the 1996 SAE is a real "key." It's more of a fad key. There is no doubt that it has the lowest mintage, but it isn't significantly lower than something like the 1994 or 1997 to warrant the prices people are currently paying. I'd rather own 60 SAEs dated 1994 than 20 dated 1996 for the same money. The buffalo, particularly if it is the proof, has more appreciation potential from current price levels than the 96SAE in my opinion; if that is your goal.

I've been buying 96 eagles for $40-50 for about 2 months now. You should be able to get that pretty easily, as long as they're not milk spotted or have any other problems. As to which one I'd rather have(the roll or a gold buffalo)...I think I'd rather have coins of value rather than bullion any day. Yeah I know the s.a.e. is a bullion coin but the 96 has some nice value that the other years don't.

I would say that the roll of silver eagles has a better potental to hold its value than the gold buffalo unless gold goes up considerably. If gold stays about were it is I would expect the proof gold buffalo to lose about a hundred dollars in value in the next few years. This is based on looking at the prices the proof eagles have been bringing. High 600's or very low 700's and it doesn't matter if it is the high 400,000+ 1986 or the 30,000 coin 2005. They all bring pretty much the same price. The Buffalo with a mintage of 300,000 is a fairly close comparison to the 1986 which is selling for $100 less than what the mint wants for the buffalo. Within a couple years I would expect the Buffalo to drop down there too. (The 2006 gold eagle still sells for close to the $800 level, but I suspect that is simply because they are new. I think they will eventually have about the same mintage as the 2005 an they will drop down to the same price level.)

As stated in other threads, the gold Buffalo has more going for it then just the price of gold. Read that thread for more input. The gold Buffalo looks like a very good investment.

I'd rather have the roll of eagles; especially if my goal is long term price appreciation.

The gold buffs will find their own market value but don't be dazzled by the newness. Some people were trying to sell the BUs at large premiums but now they've been out less than 30 days and they're already trading on par with the BU gold eagle, K-Rand, Maple Leaf, etc.

And they are not going to go away. If there is any success in the 9999 fine venture then this coin is authorized (though not mandated) in perpetuity. Ask yourself, are the 1986 gold or silver eagle coins particularly more valuable than their later counterparts? Categorically, the answer is no.
