I am pretty sure that is not a clip. Were it is clip, the edges would taper into the rim gap and I doubt that the outside of the coin would be full round. Without seeing the edge, it is kind of hard to tell about that for sure. However, has anyone noticed that the rim is misshapen above he "WE TRUST" also? And the inside of the rim does not look round particularly on the right side. Those are items I would expect to see on a cast coin. Any other thoughts?
No that's not a clip it looks lik post mint damage to me something hit the rim to give it that strange appearance, The rim has no indication of being clipped. John
I copied the image and lightened it. Without seeing the reverse or a direct shot of the edge where the anomaly is, I still lean strongly toward a very minor incomplete planchet error (that's the proper name for a "clipped planchet") Thanks, Bill
I agree. Actually, "non clip" area is hollow through the rim. I tried to get an edge on view (turned out awful) but if you see the reverse it is evident on both sides. I'll try another edge on shot which shows the lack of substrate....which I'm thinking may be bad placket.
That is why is was so sharp on the obverse - the planchet was cracked. Yes, it is a "very minor incomplete planchet error".
Too Cool WoW. Such quick interaction........(That means I finally got dinner on the table and can return here to the placid conversation until I have to do the dishes.) This 1909 VDB has become a photo challenge to me. I do appreciate the input from all of you. No way it is cast. I'm just trying to figure it out but must wait for the morning's light to shoot again.
I'm tickled! Finally had a few minutes to root through 1st round of photos again. Here is closeup of obv with sliver crack. As Rim noticed (& I didn't) the 2 o'clock rim compression. There's some fancy "effect" name attributed to such thing, no?
I still think it's post mint damage the coin looks like on the reverse has alot of indents I personnally think this is circulation damage and nothing else the coin is a hundred years old and must had been through circulation for a long long long time.. Just my opinion. Thanks John
