Okay everyone, I just got a general question to ask. I found a 1909 S wheat cent, graded VF-20 by ANACS, and it has a rim ding on the reverse. It is not too bad, doesn't show through to the obverse, but iti is unfortunatly there. The seller has taken off a little bit for the rim ding, but what would you say would be a fair price for this? How much would you take off for it? Thanks ahead of time guys. All onions, comments and suggestions will be appreciated. Phoenix
A rim ding could be a minus or a catastrophe for some coins. My last Peace dollar was graded an XF to a cull for the 2 cuts on the rim. It sure hurts, but it's the truth. It depends on the severity and the number of dings. Post a picture and I'm sure the good people here at CT will advise you. Bruce

My first choice would be to pass on the coin. The rim ding is not going to heal itself It's a coin with a (minor) problem, and it will always be. But if you must have it, I'd knock off half a grade (F-15 instead of VF-20.) Retail = about $150 Wholesale = about $120
On the contrary, it would be a bad price for it. Why ? Because it is a problem coin. For the very same amount of money you could buy a problem free coin that is the same grade as that one is net graded to. It's not like this coin is hard to find, they are out there in huge numbers. With a little patience, you can find a problem free example.
