Rim Dents - small one a big deal?

I just acquired an 1882 CC Morgan on eBay. Its a great looking coin. Almost no bag marks and frosty. The only concern I have is a small rim dent around 5:30 (under the 2 in the date) on the obverse. Its a small dent but noticeable. If I send this off for grading is it enough to put an otherwise beautiful coin in a bodybag? Do the rims have to be perfect or are small dents acceptable?

Attached is a pic from the auction. Its a little hard to see the hit. I'll take a better pic when I get home.

If you can't see it from that angle, I probably wouldn't worry about the hit.

I could be wrong but I don't think a minor rim ding would warrant a body bad. If anything it would only effect the grade.

A small rim ding should not keep a coin out of a holder. If anything it will knock a point or two off.

Now if the ding is more of a dent (meaning big), then yeah it will probably keep it out of a holder due to "damage".

It seems the rarer and more expensive the coin the more dings/dents it takes to keep it from being holdered. Don't quote me on that, just an observation.

If that coin is bodybagged, there is something wrong with the industry.

Don't take a chance that it will be body bagged. Lay it on a hard surface and hit it on all edges wth a hammer. This will make the dents all uniform so as to actually improve the looks of the coin. :smile :smile
Don't worry about it. Just send it in for grading.

I guess I've gotten a little paranoid reading about other people's problems with grading and rim dings. Problem is, I don't know what kind of dings they're talking about, huge or even minor dings.

    Here's a closeup pic.

    Thanks again for the advice.

That is so trivial you should not even worry the slightest about it.

Bah! I wouldn't worry about that little old thing. I was thinking it was an actual "dent", as in a very deep problem.

Sending that in to grade would be a decent idea.
