The planchet was incompletely blanked from the strip with dull dies, and a portion of the strip ripped off, and was left hanging as a burr on the edge of the planchet. When struck in the coining press, the burr was struck into the coin, or the coin was struck through the burr, whichever way you prefer to say it.
