At the Baltimore show, this coin went missing. Please watch for it. $127,500 1864 with L PR65RB PCGS CAC/EEPS 28899497
Damn dirty shame. I hate hearing this kinda thing. If it turns out to be stolen I hope they are caught and prosecuted to the full extent. Not that I'll ever see this, but who should be called or notified on this level of recovery? NCIC?
Just thinking this through. I really don't think it would be easy moving this coin. You can't exactly just put it up on Heritage since there will be folks looking. At minimum, it would need to be re-slabbed, but how exactly do you go about getting that done. Is there a black market for high priced stolen coins?????
No way you could easily sell this. Even if they broke it out and resubmitted it, there are only so many PR65 1864 Indian Head Cents and it will stand out. It'll catch someone's attention.
If it was stolen lets hope the idiots who stole it aren't too smart and slip up . Or hopefully they realize with only 20 minted , how hot it is and just return it via mail.
Wow, sorry to hear about this. If this is the only coin that went missing, the thief obviously knew what he was doing, what the coin was worth, and what to do with it. This one will not show up at the local pawn shop. Hope it is safely returned to Rick.
I'm thinking that most people at shows know a little about coins. They would know how to look up the value and understand how hot this coin really is. They would store it away because there is nowhere to go with it. I hope someone saw something that will help. I see Rick once a year at the Fun Show. He is really sharp and careful even when his table is busy. I wonder if other dealers lost coins as well but just don't know it yet.
If whoever it is are dumb enough to take it then lets hope they're dumb enough to try sell it so they can be caught. It cant be easy keeping an eye on all your things and serving customers when those shows can get so busy.really hope it turns up for him.
Stacks Bowers is listing this coin for auction at the Ana worlds fair of money - I recognize its probably not the same coin, but what are the odds that the listing description matches this so well?
Of course there is a black market for coins. How else do 1964 peace dollars and 1933 double eagles get moved around.
Even fewer then you might think. Did you note it was a proof 1864 L indian head cent? There are I believe fewer that 20 of those known in ANY grade. Any proof 64 L is going to attract a lot of scrutiny.
Newbie question but what does it mean "L on ribbon". I've been looking at the ribbon but can't find an "L".
There's an L on the far ribbon in Indian hair, presumably for Longacre? edit: Yep, here's an about.com article about different IHC varieties.
