CARIAN ISLANDS Rhodes AR Drachm 188-170 B.C. 3.16 grams, 17 mm Obv: Radiant head of Helios facing right Rev: Rose with P to left and O to right, magistrate AINHTΩP above all within an incuse square Grade: ??? All it took was a quick measurement of weight & dimension and this was really easy to find in the books.
This is number 3 of 4 from the Westchester coin show. I already have a Rhodes coin with Helios facing forward. I thought that this new puppy looked cool with the radiate sun god’s head facing to the right. This drachm got my attention from afar. The toning and eye appeal drew me to it and the price wasn’t so bad (based solely on the pretty-factor). What do you think of my selection & what would you experts grade this one? Addendum- Rhodes is a Greek Island that is located way-off in the Aegean Sea quite a distance south east of Athens. It is very close to modern day Turkey. I personally have not been to Rhodes but my friend says it is a good place to visit. Sorry to post so many new threads today. I got a total of four new ancient coins at the Westchester coin show & I’m working my way up to posting the biggest one now. THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE & I look forward to your grade opinions.
'Plinthophoric' coinage. Ainetor, magistrate. Jenkins, Rhodian, Group A, 7. I don't like to give grades, so I'll let others answer.
As phat as this coin looks in pictures its like a thousand times better in person. I mean when you open the album your eye falls to it. Looks at all the devices on the reverse complete with a clear magistrate. Coin is quite awesome. You did very well my friend.
Collect89 => I have an example that is on the total other end of the Rhodes-spectrum ... I have a cute lil' rare, early issue of this same coin (it certainly isn't as "grand" as your example, but it is certainly an interesting contrast, eh?) Rhodes AR Hemidrachm 408-390 B.C. Diameter: 13.0 mm Weight: 1.7 grams Obverse: Head of Helios facing Reverse: Rose in incuse square Other: rare early issue
Yep. I'm going to post my question in this new thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t226449/#post1690988 I'm looking forward to everyone's guidance.
