I came across a 1942 D, the steps appear different than the 1941 Reverse. Mainly the third step column has much more detail than the other three ( Strong FS, all details are visible and this is an excellent strike by the way) , I was wondering if there was a modification to the reverse die in 1942.
Hi 09-s vdb IN Bernard Nagengast book the Jefferson nickel analyst on page 82 he says . Virtually all uncirculated examples show at least five steps, and are extremely nice, full strike coins in the 1942-d. But he says nothing about a die change for that year. He also says that some 6 step coins probably exist.Hopefully there is some one out there that has more info to help you.
Hi, The 1942-D has what is commonly called the "reverse of 1940". This design change was made during the 1939 production run. The next major reverse design change (other than the large MM issues) occured in 1967. As Bruce said, your coin has well-defined design features (steps) because that's the way most of that issue was made.
My '42d has only partial steps but the 42s war nickel appears to have full steps..the pics are a tiny bit blurry since I took them through a magnifying glass, so it's hard to see.
