Reverse Hub Impression 1861 CSA 1 Cent Hi, I wanted to know if anybody knows exactly what this is and what the rarity of it...? I found some info on the exact thing here: http://www.csacurrency.com/csacoin/restrike.htm[/URL] but I'm not quite following what the writer is saying as I'm from Canada & Mint process terms are a little different over here. It is numbered with #120 on the Bust Part - bottom left, outer ring but it looks to have some symbols on the outer ring as well. I have no idea what it is made of but looks like some kind of metal; maybe lead. It was referred to by a late collector as a Reverse Hub Impression of or for, a 1861 CSA 1 Cent. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! TKD
Here is one reference on the Braslow restrikes of the confederate cents. http://www.rebelstatescurrency.com/bashlow.html Here are some of my restrikes. The one on the left is not a Braslow. The other 3 are what your article referred to as the later restrikes after defacement and transfer dies were produced. I am not sure what the number you refer to unless it is one of the many tokens produced for different Confederate celebration and historical events. Photo would help if possible. Jim
I'm clicking on the attachment button but nothing happened...? I'd really love to show you this! Thanks though for the reference Jim!
Thanks, I'll try again but the Manage Attachments button doesn't do anything when I click on it. The Browse doesn't come up...?
These appear to be made of lead or similar metal and were probably used by Bashlow in 1961 as test strikes before making the future re-strikes. Just my idea, I have know sure idea this is what these actually are.
I bought mine in the 80s, and I haven't kept up with prices. The prices vary according to the composition ( rarity) and also is higher if PCGS or such as far as authenticity. It is a nice example and I think it is worth it to build a collection. here is another thread http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t33020 The "imposters" that use a different date such as 1862 are easy to detect, but I have seen some where the chisel marks didn't match the known. I am envious of the other ones you have Those are unusual and to a Bashlow collector would be a catch! There is a book http://www.amazon.com/Lovett-Cent-Confederate-Story/dp/1847288782 also. I borrowed mine through the county interlibrary loan program. Jim
1861 CSA 1 Cent Die Pics Hi Jim, I rec'd my 2 pieces today. I can send you some bigger pics because these ones are the biggest I could upload for the thread. I think you might want to see them close up! If you send me your e-mail, I send you some hi-rez digital photos. TKD
Those are great! They are thinner than I thought from the previous photos. The thing that confuses me a little is that in the first photos you posted showed one as a strike ( lettering read normal, bust faces left and the other was the reversal, and I thought it was the die, but it appears the same as the others. Do you know more about their history? Is the 50- marked on it the price ( I assumed at first) or the number. I wonder if these might be original transfer dies made from the breaking up original dies? Interesting! Thanks for sharing. Read that book ! Jim
I strongly believe that they are indeed the original transfer dies made from the breaking up original dies. My original pics were confusing because I mirrorred them to show what the finished coin would look like to be able to better compare to the CSA cents already out there. I have sent my pics to Harold Levi author as you probably know of The Lovett Cent; a Confederate Story as per his request. He wants to get a good look at them. I haven't received a reply from him as of yet.
Jim, the 50 on the enveloppe is the price I think, possibly the price sold by Bashlow to some dealer or sold from one dealer to another. I'm going to try to get in touch with the person I bought these from and get some more details if I can but he doesn't seem to know too much as it was his late father-in-law's. TKD
Maybe he will send you a signed copy of his book! Nice. Forms the beginning basis of a true "collection". Keep it up! Jim
Thanks Jim, actually I already have his book from your reference in my Amazon shopping cart, lol. Haven't paid yet though, I'm trying to find it a little cheaper on E-Bay! If these do turn out to be something special, you've already got Bragging Rights as this is the First & Only USA Coin forum where I posted these Pics. Thanks so much for your help, I'll keep you updated. TKD
