Okay, as promised, I have posted before and after fotos of the worst affected of the coins. The nickel is obverse only as the reverse had nothing adverse on it and the dip didn,t change anything. As mentioned in my previous thread this might be of educational interest to other members and those considering using acetone on their proofs. Oviously the surfaces of all coins could react differently to acetone, so this is for information only, NOT ADVICE on what to do with your coins
It looks like your images were not taken under the same conditions. The before-and-after backgrounds are different. Can't truly make a comparison.
The "gunk" around the rims and lettering all but disappeared and as you say a lot of the white spots are gone. Definite improvement. Part two of the experiment is now to soak them overnight and see what happens. As mentioned I am prepared to "sacrifice" these three coins if it is necessary to obtain info on the effect of acetone on proof surfaces. And, yes, i will use the same background for the fotos
