I ended up getting about 22 sets of the JFK coins. The first 10 or 15 I got were terrible, with obvious spots on the reverse of the dollars. I thought I would not send any in to grade, as they were obviously not going to get a 70. The last couple boxes I received (which were the last ones shipped, so probably a new die) revived my hopes for a 70! All of them were nicer than any other RP dollar I got in any previous sets. I picked the top 5, and took my chances. I think they all look pretty darn nice, with one having a tone spot on the reverse rim towards the right. Take a look and tell me what you think...
Photos have a tendency to be very unforgiving in that they pick up every last imperfection/failing that you might otherwise miss if you were holding the coin in hand. All 70's.........
Pinprick behind the head obverse, what looks like a spot over '$1' reverse, and another small pinprick to the left of the crown. Both of my sets had these same 'pinpricks', although not in the same places.
Anyone see any issues with number 3 other than the toning spot? And should that keep a coin from a 70?
The mark on the right shoulder was my problem with it, but I was also wondering if the mark on the chin was on the coin or on the slab.
All graded 69. These were the top 5 I had. I could see a few imperfections on a couple, but I thought 1 or 2 might make the grade. I put the ones I thought would be 69 in as 69 bait, hoping they would give them the 69, then see the obvious quality difference on the nicer ones and give them a boost to 70. Didn't work. Oh well, no risk, no reward! I will be receiving 14 Johnson sets... I will have to decide about those as well.
