Hi, I am getting a 5 peso mexican gold coin from a forum member in another forum, it was minted in 1955 and it has an usual bright BU luster for a coin so old. I have been told it is a restrike.

What exactly is a restrike and why did they make restrikes?

    Thank you

Go to the main page here at Coin Talk - click on the Search button - type in restrike and hit your enter key. I think that will give you an adequate explanation ;)

thakn you, but the information tends to be very broad. was this paticular coin struck with orginial dies?

Some of them probably were yes - that's the definition of a restrike. But it is also likely that they cut new dies to strike some as well.

The most famous examples of restrikes are 1915 Austrian Ducats and Maria Theresa Thalers. The latter is perhaps the ultimate example of a restrike.

So what you're saying is that my thaler isn't 225 years old? The guy I bought it from assured me it was real but the light in the alley was pretty dim.Now that I look at it,looks more like 225 days old..hehe ;)
