Like some others on CoinTalk, I have been reshooting old cell phone pictures now that I have a better camera set up. I used to take phone pictures by bracing the phone on a stand and using its built in light. Here is what I got:

Here is my new photo, which is much closer to how the coin looks in reality:

Now I just have many more to do. :)

You can really see the difference in quality when you click on the photos and see the enlargements.

Your phone photo was better than most phone photos but the new one is quite nice. The problem with pictures is every so often you want to upgrade showing what you have learned or how good your new camera is. If your collection is small, this is no problem. What gets disturbing is when you try to improve an old photo and find you can't do as well as before.

I can see that happening Doug. I took this one today with really bright natural light coming into the room from windows and a skylight. I had a small LED ring light and nothing else. All the photos I took came out super today, but I think it was the particular lighting.

Much better IMHO. Not long ago, I took on the task of re-imaging all my coins. Some turned out better, others not as good as the original. I had nearly 700 coins at that point and I can say with honesty, that I had fun re-shooting. But at the time, I thought it was a daunting task.

Theodosius, can you make a picture of your setup for us? That could clarify things.

I kinda like the "before" shot ... it's a bit more dramatic (but if it isn't a true image, then the new version is obviously the correct image to go with)

    as above....
The contrast and light/shade are better in the top pic. Have you thought of some low level side lighting as an addition to try and give it a bit more shadow?
