Republica Portuguesa 1974 5$00 ( Rotated Reverse )

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by youletmeworryaboutthat, Dec 16, 2018.

  1. I have about quite a few world coins with various potential mint errors, and I would like to get more informed on the subject.

I am planning to post all of the coins over the next few days to get feedback from the community.

    Thanks in advance.

This is the one coin in my collection that I can confidently say has a mint error.

    Republica Portuguesa 1974 5$00 ( Rotated Reverse )

Can anyone confirm for me what this could mean for the value of this coin?

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think you misunderstand the orientation of this coin.
There are two types of orientation : coin alignment and medal alignment. This Portugal 1974 5 Escudo has coin alignment , which means that if you turn it from left to right(or right to left) it will be upside down.
Medal alignment means that if you flip this coin from top to bottom, it will be right side up.

Top to bottom is coin alignment.
Side to side is medal alignment.

Now, get off the internet and practice turning your coin back and forth until you get it right.
A proper understanding of coin orientation is probably the most important aspect of coin collecting that you could possibly need to learn.

The 1974-dated 5$00 piece is correctly aligned. According to Numista.com, 1976 and 1981 are the only years with coin and medal alignment varieties.

  5. Thank you for the education on this crucial alignment varieties.

So my 1974 5$00 escuado coin has a reverse error.
When flipping it from top to bottom it shows the reverse side upside down. See attached images.

What can this do for the valuation this coin?

    Thanks again!

Sir , my advice would be to find an expert on the 1974 5 Escudo Portugal coin that you have and let that person advise you on the potential value of such an amazing find, since that person would be much, much more qualified to evaluate your coin than anyone on this web site.

Thank you, Thanks for posting, and I wish you very Good Luck.
