Reporting someone to the police/secret service for selling counterfeits?

I recently won an item on ebay from the seller Estate Doctor. I bid 50k on the item, as it was counterfeit, and did not want any poor soul to be stuck with it. I told him it was counterfeit, and asked him to remove it. He did not. He has now filed a complaint with ebay. I received an unpaid item strike, and was cited for transaction interference.

He is a criminal. Any suggestions/thoughts on the best way to approach this?

You should have stayed out of it. You could have just e-mailed him and told him it was a counterfeit and or e-mailed the high bidder as the auction went along telling him it was counterfiet..You never should have bid on it. Also, You could have just accepted the coin, and then sent it back for a refund.

Ed, the seller made the auction private, so that others could not warn the high bidder it was counterfeit. I also would not feel comfortble sending 2600 dollars to buy a coin I know is counterfeit.

I would never do this as you would probably never see any of the money again. If the guy is going to sell an obvious conterfit, I doubt that he is going to be honest enough to return your money.

I would have just let him know and report him to ebay then contact the buyer if the info was available.

I do not know anything about ebay but is there anyway you could talk to one of the big dogs with the ebay and explain exactly what happened. seems like their should be someone around there that can talk on the phone that has some authority. When you think about it you not only helped out the one that was going to get stuck with this token but also seems ebay benefited.

I agree with bamaguy. And furthermore, I'm frustrated with all the e-bay horror stories I hear. It seems like there should be some way to shut down these people who deal in fakes. Has anyone here ever talked to someone who actually has some authority in the e-bay organization? I just don't understand how these scam artists continue to get away with what they're doing, consequence free. I guess I'm just rambling...

I have a feeling that without actually having received a counterfeit, there is not much I can do. I think I am just going to let this one go. Dealing with ebay anymore nowadays is such a hassle.

Do this! Thats use the FBI.
It is internet fraud. Hey maybe you'll get a medal from them at least they can make eBay remove the neg.

I don't think I'd ever bid on something I did ot intend to buy. Actually I'm positive about it. I too am tired of the eBay stories. If you use common sense and educate yourself about eBay this can be avoided. This is EACH INDIVIDUALS responsibility!!! The guy probably is a thief, but don't bid on an item then start complaining like this. Typical of todays society: You screw up and look to other to blame and take no reesponsibility for it your self! :headbang:

And under what legal authority could they do that, even if they wanted to?

I strongly suspect the logistics of actually pursuing the idea of reporting this crook to the authorities are troublesome and not worth the time or effort. I just wish more people would educate themselves before bidding 2500 dollars on something that isn't even real.

'They state that they will remove a neg under court order, well, if the FBI is involved... I don't know, it just kinda made sense at the time.
    Never mind.

I disagree with your advice. Pam does NOT play nicely and if he had actually paid he would NOT have seen a refund. Maybe you aren't aware but this person is a chronic abuser on ebay. I kinda assumed that Zane had used an alt ID to do his bidding and expected a neg, but aparently not. Anyway, I have no problem with what he did, it was noble.

I had a thought about this that hasn't been discussed yet:

How were people prosecuted / punished for selling such counterfeits before the internet? Or were they? There must be some history of these types of situations that some of the older / wiser folks here know about that might shed some light on the situation.

When I first started selling & buying on ebay in 98 you could call them and speak to someone live. Now since about 2002 there is no way that you can get a live person. What you have to do is go to the home page, and near the top on the right hand side go to LIVE HELP, and you can write back and forth with someone. I have been hacked into several times, and actually had them call me through Live Help...Maybe this can help...
