i'm curious...do people collect replicas? if so, why? why a replica opposed to the real thing? and if the real thing is no longer around, why the replica? i know each person collects what they like but i'm curious as to people's likes of replicas and i just want a better understand of the coin collecting in general.
There is a market out there which sells replicas of coins to knowing buyers who want a nice representation without having to pay high dollars for the real deal. In fact they are buying junk, not worth a fraction of the money spent. A novelty if you will. There must be collectors as a result of availability. I don't collect replicas but I do have a 33 Double Eagle Proof and a 36 Mercury Proof replica. They are certainly just novelties to me. They are also examples I use to educate those who know nothing of hobby I so much enjoy. Keep on Collecting!!! Allen
some people cant afford to get the real thing and dont like having and empty hole in there album, at least until then can get the real thing. some of its just bullion. some are kinda neat and I think some collections spring up because of that; they have a few because of what ever reason, liked them and started a collection I'm sure someone will post better reasons.
My local dealer is suppose have real nice collection of very good fake or replica coins. The way he explained it - He loves coins, but as a dealer he needs to make a living, so he does not collect anything, but replicas(or fakes). Besides he gets to hold a lot of rare coins - this past weekend he had two capped bust half eagles - both AU - 1 1805 and one 1807. If he did then these would have been two he kept - or so he said.
