I just aquired a 1999 silver proof set that has ugly toning on several of the quarters. Is there a fix to this? What is your advice? Thanks.

Some like toning but I do not. I consider toned coins to be junk and of no value to me from a collecting standpoint.

Best advise is to buy another set. I know they are not cheap, but honestly, particularly with proof coins, any attempt to clean them will only result in a damaged coin....which will bring you back to buying another set. This way, you can at least ebay/sell off the set you currently own.

    A couple important questions:

    1) Were you aware of the toning when you acquired the set? If you were not aware of the toning and were led to believe the set was a normal set, you might want to try to get your money back. If you were aware the set had problems like toning when you acquired it, then never mind.

    2) Is the set in the original mint packaging? If it is, then any attempt to remove the toning will certainly compromise the set and devalue the set. Too bad. If it is not in the original Mint packaging, then you can try to clean them, but you probably won't like the results.

Unless you think you can grow to love the toning, your best bet is to either get your money back or sell the set to someone else and make it their problem.
