I read on a DB somewhere that Novus plastic polish #2 works well at removing scratches from slabs. Does anyone have any experience with this? For those of you unfamiliar with the product, Novus sells a three-stage plastic polish and scratch remover: #1 is for deep scratches, #2 for medium and #3 is simply an abrasive-free plastic cleaner. I read that #3 is not necessary and #1 is only a cleaner which can be replaced with Windex. Thanks.
I haven't tried that product. I have used Brasso and a soft cloth and gotten good results, though it's most effective with small shallow scratches.
Another I tried and has worked to a moderate degree is Slab-Renew. I purchased it two years ago off the internet. It comes in a 4 oz. bottle and you use just a few drops of it and a terry cloth to apply. I think it was under $10 even with postage.
Thanks for the replies and for the link, Jim. I'm going to give Novus a try; it's only $6 through Amazon. I'll report how it works. I have the sense it will remove light scratches but not deep ones.
PS: I think I'll try Scratch Out on my truck! I might have to buy a case, though. Maybe I'll experiment on a slab with it, too.
I don't have the answer, but I can tell you who does. That 1879 Indian Charmy posted and the original picture from B&M. I don't know what Todd did, he has the answer. BTW, I am 99% sure it is the same slab. Look at the first feather in hie headdress.
Megular''s PlastiX works well. And Todd is a photographer of coins. His company is like BlueCC or something like that. He takes good photo's and I"m sure if you do a search you will find his work all around. Plus someone will post here soon enough about him for you.
Yes this works very well as I own a Miata and use it on the back plastic window it is a 3 step process depending on how deep the scratches are.
I use Novus. #2 has handled about 90% of the scratches I've encountered. #3 works for most of the rest (you have to follow up with #2 because #3 is abrasive enough to make the surface look slightly foggy). Occasionally the scratch is deep enough that #3 won't completely remove it, but I can live with that. #1 helps with dirt, fingerprints and other crud. The only problem I've encountered that Novus doesn't handle is adhesives from labels that have been peeled off. DON'T USE ACETONE TO REMOVE THE ADHESIVE. It will REALLY mess the slab up. You can use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol but ONLY the 70% stuff you get from the drug store. The 95% stuff will behave the same as acetone and mess up the slab. And even with the 70% stuff don't let it remain too long on the slab. Someone may have a better suggestion for removing adhesives.
90% sound good enough for me. I don't think I have any big gouges anyway. BTW, I use Bestine (rubber cement solvent) for sticker residue; works great and won't haze the plastic. I've used it on CD covers for years.
