The Battle of Ourique occured on July 25, 1139.
Portuguese Prince Afonso's army defeated the Moors.
Prince Afonso later became the first King of Portugal.

Can't say I've heard of that battle (only European history class I took didn't cover anything before the 17th century). Neat coin though.

Great looking coin. Here's my example of the coin.

Here is one that was issued in 1989. It commemorates the same battle (1139) and also the "foundation" of Portugal (1140).

That's one of the finest portrayals of a knight on horseback that I've ever seen.

One would think for a coin with a mintage of 200,000 pieces that a nice MS example would be easy to come by. I searched for 18 months before I finally found my example in a Heritage auction. As a one-year type coin, this is a beautiful design and less available than the mintage leads one to believe.
