I was just remembering, from back in the mid sixties when I was kid....... There seemed to be a lot of hype connected to the 1960 D nickel where the zero in the date connected to the rim because of a die chip. It was called the "Bar 0". I found so many odf these things that it wasn't funny. Of course, as a 10 year old, you're not convinced that something isn't rare, even if you found 20 of them yourself. Today, this variety doesn't even warrant a footnote. It's not listed in my error - variety book. I wonder where all of mine went ? Paul
Paul. I would think it is just like the BIE cent from the sixties, they just fade away and people lose interst. Bruce.
I think the BIE still generates some interest. I cracked open a roll of 1956 not long ago and there were a lot of nice Red BIE and a few clogged 9 errors. I've sold a few on Overstock. Usually get $2-3.
I have an old variety book (27 years old) that lists the bar nickles. There's one bar zero that the author describes as a double mint mark. The book has 11 bar varieties for the 1961 D nickle listed. Lou
Lou. What is the name of that reference book the 60 bar"O" is a new one on me however I will go through all my rolls of 60's now thanks. Bruce. PS is it just 60 and 61-d or all 60's
Paul: Yup, I remember it, and Frank Spadone was the one who listed and named it. He did list some funny varieties (at least they are funny today).
Bruce the name of the book is "Major Variety and Oddity by Frank G. Spa done eight edition. The first nickle bar variety listed in the book is a 1940 D bar zero and the last bar listed is a 1963 D bar 3. he list all kinds of varieties including the 1968 S floating head. I think you guys where talking about a similar nickle a few days ago. Here's a good one 1960 D stratus cloud/dome. Hey Frank, good memory. Lou
Lou: Yup, I used it when I was a kid, also saved a lot of worthless junk. LoL. At lease old Frank Spadone did something to interest variety collectors.
I get a chuckle over some of the terms he used like 1966 nickle mouse on the roof or the bird nest on chimney. Lou
Lou. Just for the fun of it after reading your post I pulled a roll of 1960-d from my roll set in that roll, I found one bar coin as you call it. It had a cud over the "0" in the date and a cud over the"E & R" in the word liberty I guess you could say I just have to much time on my hands today. Bruce.
Bruce, A lot of Mr. Spadone's work is cataloged here... http://overdate1.tripod.com/coinvarieties/id13.html
I cant speak for anyone else..but die chips and rare coin weren't even on my mind when I was 10..lmao
Jody. There is a lot of info on just one page had know idea or even heard of Mr Spardoen just goes to show you can learn something new everyday no matter how old you are. How I will have to find a used book store to see if I can buy that old book of his.Collecting for me never has been about makeing money or having something that no one else has, it has always been about the fun and enjoyment of the hobby. The riches in my life are a loving wife and the daughters that think of me as there friend. Bruce.
Bruce, The bar nickle that you found is not listed in the book but it does list the following: bar/er, bar/bert and a bar/bert zero. List price in unc 1.00. The book covers half cents thru gold pieces with 150 pages of information. I picked up the book used for 3.00 about 12 years ago. Lou
There are many "purists" left, Bruce. Most of us don't spend a lot of time on internet chat boards, but we are far from an extinct species. LOL I know how much Patti means to you, and I feel the same way about my better half. We don't have kids, but hey, that's one of the reasons I share what I can on this forum.
Jody. You truly are special to me, if you look up the word purists in the dictionary there will be a picture of you. Bruce.
This thread jogged my memory. When I was about 13 years old (I'll give you a hint - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band had just come out) I recall finding a couple of them in circulation. I still have them. Here are some scans. Mine aren't in particularly high grade, but the mintmark and the bar-0 are clear. Does anyone know what these are worth?
