I used to be a member of ANA many years ago, and let it lapse as I considered the Library as the best part of the deal, and other interests ( mainly a young son at the time) became more important. When I re-started interest after retirement in 2004, I thought the internet based information was better. But when I joined the local coin club almost 3 years ago, it was ANA affiliated and there seemed to be extra Numismatist issues I would take to read as almost everyone else had their own. Eventually I noticed that newer members were coming into the club, and that the articles were better than I remembered, so I called them up to see if I could get my old number back if I rejoined. Well yes, said the nice Chris, but we will have to get it out of the archives, so we will call back. Got the call that they found me, and I could rejoin, but if I wanted it to say member since I first joined, I would have to pay back dues, which would take a while to look up the dues for each year and add up......I declined. Ok, how about Life membership.....well looking at it I would have to live to 91 to break even at current fees, so I declined. I decided to take a 2 year option, as I wanted her to know I wasn't a flash in the pan. The she said "say , do you know Doug,? He is so old, that we have to pay him each year!" Well all except the last is true :smile Jim # 1137202
LOL! Very funny Jim. Can't believe they'd charge you the back dues. That stinks. Welcome back to ANA. After my years around coins, I finally joined this year after getting a free membership through a TeleTrade promotion. I like it a lot and think I'll maintain my membership going forward.
For me the Library and ability to submit to NGC, NCS and PMG without being a member of those grading companies. money.org [ANA]
They would only charge the back dues if I wanted it so say Member since 1986. I was just glad I could get my old number back.
Welcome back. I can proudly say I have been an ANA Life Member since 1986. That $400 investment (if I remember correctly) was well worth it. Access to the largest numismatic library in the US. Subscription to The Numismatist (the ANA's monthly magazine). Access to your numismatic education through correspondence courses and mini-courses at national coin shows as well as the ANA Summer Seminar. Discounts on merchandise. Free admission to ANA Conventions and National Money Show and World's Fair of Money. Free admission to ANA Museum. Discount for ANA Summer Seminar for Life Members. Ability to submit coins to NGC and NCS. Member discounts for coin insurance. Plus your membership helps support the largest voice for coin collectors.
ANA has a Diploma Program where you can get your diploma in numismatics. You can also simply take individual courses of your choosing: Introduction To Numismatics Grading Coins Today Grading Mint-State US Coins Detecting Counterfeit and Altered US Coins The Modern Minting Process and Errors & Varieties There may also be other correspondence courses available. If you are interested let me know and I will inquire for you. I will be going by ANA headquarters Tuesday or Wednesday.
I just renewed my ANA membership. But I am interested in finding out more about NCS and what they do and can't do. There isn't much discussion here on coin talk regarding NCS.
I just rejoined after a two or three year lapse. They also wanted to charge me back dues to get my old # back. So I did the same as Jim, signed up for a two year membership with a new #, so I lose the seniority, big deal. I like getting the Numismatist magazine, but for me the best part of membership is the break I get on insurance for my collection. You get an ANA member discounted rate on your annual premium through Hugh Wood collectibles insurance. For me the savings was huge. I'm paying about 50% of what I was quoted by other insurance agencies to insure my collection.
I joined because of the Hugh Wood and the Dell discounts. The rest of the benefits made it a winning deal.
NCS has nothing to do with the ANA, they are not affiliated in any way. The best way to find out about NCS is just to visit their web site. Or just ask questions here on the forum.
I am 15 years old and think I will collect coins all my life... I would really value the NGC submission... Any recommendations: Basic or Regular? Life membership seems fairly practical.
I'm sure glad EAC didn't charge me back dues either time they gave me back my original member number. #1799 is a good number for an EACer. I couldn't have handled $750 for the prestige.
