Registry Set ?

I purchased a set of Silver Eagles from 1986 to 2019 which included one 2000 Silver Eagle MS-70.

I looked on Apmex to see one of these listed for over $3000 with the note (Registry Set).

From what I could gather from searching around, a Registry Set is merely a group of coins in a collection posted on line in a (registry).

As a new collector, am I missing something ? Does Registry Set denote something additional about this coin ?

Both NGC and PCGS have Registry Sets available for their members. Many of these are "competitive" sets where the owner receives points for the grades of every coin in the set.

I am glad you asked this question. Registry sets are talked about frequently here. They are something that came along after my prime! I believe I know what a registry set is but rather than make a fool of myself I will await those in the know. I’m interested in the answer too.

So does being in a registry set give the coin a pedigree? How does being in a registry set make an ASE worth $3000.00?

Thank you for posting the question properly.
One of these days I'll be able to edit my posts BEFORE posting LOL. I had a boss who would write out his speeches then cross out most of it before giving the speech. He said he was a better editor than a writer.

Sorry I shake too much to take proper pictures, tried to use a scanner but no better.

No, you’re not missing anything. Some sellers add “registry set” to the description, because it’s an MS/PF70 coin. In a registry set a coin graded 70 will get a higher score than a 69.

You're not the only one, get one of those suction cup holders and stick it to a table and let it hold the camera/phone so you just have to touch buttons.

This is the Registry Set of one of our members, @Lehigh96 who won an award for it. I hope you don't mind if I used it as an example, Paul.

Perhaps someone who actually has a Registry Set can answer this.

$3000 for an MS70 2000 Silver Eagle is about the average price they've gone for on Heritage for the last year.

$3000 for any '70 silver eagle is stupid money, and anyone who buys into the hype is 'stupid' too........

I assume in this context "(Registry set)" means "buy this coin to add to your Registry Set so your score will go up".

I won't go so far as to call paying $3K for an MS70 ASE "stupid", but I'm comfortable with "silly".
