I am asking for help from experts in the silver coinage of Roman Antioch. I bought this coin: the tetradrachm of Nero of Antioch AD 63/64, AE23/24 mm.. Poor condition, but a coin with tradition and suitable for my financial capabilities. I wonder about its weight: 10.83 g. (normal weight near 14 g). I checked the cubic volume of coin and calculated the silver content to be approximately 70 percent. I also found two coins with a similar reduced? weight from the same year and type: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=8985107 https://www.coinarchives.com/a/openlink.php?l=2222589|5383|1750|ff28428affca9e6247cdaf6c05060a0b Hence my question: did some of Nero's tetradrachms have their weight reduced in AD 64? Greetings, Robert
It's pretty heavily worn, so that's most likely the reason. I know he reduced the silver content of coins, but I don't know about these particular tets. Both of mine are 14g.
