This version of the 50 centavos ran from 1970-1983. The variety is termed “with dots in the dots”, denoting the dots on the tail of Aztec ruler’s feathered crown. 1971 People's Republic of China 1 Fen, KM #1 (Aluminum). The obverse shows the entrance to the Forbidden City (The Tiananmen). The .01 Aluminum coins ceased production in 1992. In 2005 it was struck again for circulation, in nickel-plated steel, still carrying a value equivalent to 0.01 renminbi (yuan). It is also used officially in the Republic of Zimbabwe as part of their multi-currency system. Based on the yuan, the fen is also unofficially accepted in neighboring North Korea.
