Good Day All, After reading the 6 page long posting from Detecto and reserving my own comments I wanted to ask this question. I would like the input of all of you here about what Old World Coins that you collect that are silver or gold and please list Country, year and denomination and possibly if you can PM me the link to who sells them (if Online) to you. Thank you John
I don't know precisely what you want but perhaps this will help. Swiss 2 Franc Latvia 5 Lati Mexico 5 Peso (200,000 mintage) Italy 2 Lire Italy 500 Lire All these low cost silver coins were purchased from the same local dealer. He sets-up at shows in Eastern NY, Connecticut, & Massachusetts. I will PM his contact data.
Its really hard for me to recommend what coins to buy since I collect mostly on interest rather than an investment standpoint. The most important thing to me is eye appeal and why you collect. One of the series I collect is the Liberia silver series of 10, 25, 50 cents and dollar coins from 1960-1961. And that reason is because I got a few from my father's collection. And I want to finish the series. I also collect old Hungary and Austria silver coins and am starting a bit on Great Britain. And of course China and Taiwan silver coins, since thats where I'm from. Old world coins are not that easy to find online, and especially when you're dealing with Chinese coins you always have to be careful.
Here is a gold World coin (1902 Russia 5 Rouble) that I recently purchased from the same dealer (PM was already sent to you).
If you like world coins, I cannot recommend highly enough buying the Krause catalogs. They are the numbering all world coin dealers use. Many times in ads they just put the KM number and grade, letting you look the coin up yourself. By doing so, you can: 1. Look at coins at your leisure, see which ones you are interested in to look for 2. Buy from sites or ads that do not post pics of all coins. John Ferm is a world coin dealer who lives near me who runs such ads in NN and World coin news. Great guy, but his shop is a mess since he literally sells almost nothing from foot traffic. Everything is mail order or a little internet.
If you like #1 & #4, then you will probably like most of the coins in these previous threads: :thumb: http://www.cointalk.com/t206704/ http://www.cointalk.com/t211756/ http://www.cointalk.com/t95402/ If you do a search for the word "batch" from collect89, you will find a bunch of similar silver coins of the world. :smile
Old world? Like maybe Rome or Greece? Some real beauties to be had if you are interested in that direction.
Yeah, I love that design so much I bought a nice little XF/AU just for fun. Don't try to buy a 5 lire inexpensively, though. A high end 5 lire is a 5 figure coin unfortunately.
Yes I should have mentioned that before old world I meant like 19th century or early to late mid 20th century. Thanks
French coins seem to be a good value. I have been looking around, and there are pretty good deals to be had on them compared with US coins from the same time period. You can pick up a "Hercules" for a lot less than a comparable US coin for example. http://silveragecoins.com/en/details.php?item=6284
If you don't already have them, purchase the two Krause catalogs that cover this time period. You will find plenty of coin (photos) that will speak to you.
