Very nice looking group of coins. Looks like you shooting for all MS, or at least high AU. That, of course, explains most of the holes. Those date/mintmark combos get very pricy in the upper grades.
I haven't had time to check them all out. Been too busy with work, which is a good thing. I did start taking them out of the albums and rinsing each with acetone. I'll keep them out of the albums. They're old, stinky, and the plastic slides are dirty. I was glad to see an O/S on the 1882-O.
Very nice set. My favorite is the 1878-cc because that's the first Morgan dollar I ever owned from my grandfather's collection.
very nice, i don't have any of those yet but i just googled an 1878-cc and they seem very fairly priced to own.
Saw this thread over at CU, and commented as well These are some nice looking coins, some with the potential of getting 65's or even better, photos, not scans, might be able to determine a better guess, but the best way to grade a coin is in hand Nice set my friend, and congrats on the pickup
How about an update? I sent some of the coins to PCGS for grading. The 1882-O O/S is an early die state of VAM 5. The EDS version is rarer and PCGS has a separate number for it. Came back MS62. There are two other 1882-O VAM 5 EDS coins in MS62 and none higher (PCGS pops 3/0). I was very excited that the 80-O made MS64 and there were three MS65's in the submission. Here are some of the grades: 1878-P 7TF MS63PL 1880-O MS64 1881-P MS65 1881-CC MS65 1882-CC MS63 1883-CC MS63 1885-S MS63 1890-O MS63 1891-S MS63 1903-O MS65
Well done -- it seems like you should be generally happy with these grades based on what I see. These coins comprise a set that goes well together. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, stinkin nice set. Too bad the original owner felt they had to sell it. It's unfortunate. Sounds like you are getting some nice grade out of the deal, so good on ya!
I think I was in the right place at the right time. Supposedly the set had just been bought that day. I was looking through a junk box of Morgans, and people were lining up to sell jewelry/silver/gold/coins. I can't believe how much silver and gold these places must flip to balance what they spend each day. They showed me the partial set. They checked each coin and priced it against greysheet bid. I paid what they asked and assume they made a nice profit. After removing the coins from the albums, I rinsed them in acetone. Sent some of the nicest ones in. If I go by greysheet bid, just a few of the coins total more than I paid.
This is one of the things that bothers me. I know the dealer that sold it to me made money. I wish he could have spent more time with the original seller to value the coins. Even when I purchased them, I felt a bit rushed. It's a busy place.
