Last week I went to a two day local auction that was exclusively coins. It was quite an experience!

I had previewed most of the lots before the auction, so I had a pretty good idea what was being sold. One bidder was paying absolutely insane money for quite a few of the lots, but I was able to win quite a few pieces.

One lot that was described in the catalog as "5.9 Pounds of Wheat Cents" had 230 1909 VDB cents in it. Unfortunately, a fellow dealer noticed the lot so I had to pay a bunch for that one.

I also won a lot that was described as "Roll of Washington Quarters 1932-1939" that included 17 uncish 1934 coins and 10 1932 XF/AU coins.

One of my interesting lots was a roll of quarters that was described as "Washington Quarters/D Mint/30-40-50s" that included the coins listed below. I paid $88 for the roll.

Very nice! Sometimes it pays when people don't know what they've got!

Very Nice! What would you grade those two as?

For anyone - Why does the 2008 blue book go from ex40 to ms60?

    Thanks for sharing!

The original owner probably knew that these coins were valuable. It was a quite impressive collection. He unfortunately passed away.

What was nice about this lot is that 50 other people in the room could have bid on it, but I was the only person to notice the gems in the roll.

After this lot sold for $1,925, the auctioneer went on to the next lot of 4.9 pounds of wheat cents. He started the bidding at $1,000 thinking that the other lots were also valuable. The lot sold for $55!
