Ok, I am about to buy a coin that really nice. I got it confirmed as it being legit.

The ebay Auction is sat up for the user ID being private. Other than the coin being fake, and the auction being a total scam, what is the other purposes of this?

the seller has 100% feedback at 3,509 total...and is a power seller.

    I have 2700+, 100% and am a powerseller.

I recently sold a high dollar coin on the bay, and as a private listing.

Some folks prefer anonymity and privacy. Last time I sold a string of high enders, I had emails asking if I would change the listings to private so they could bid, but it was too late as the items already had bids.

Other than what Jack said, and fraud, the only other reason is to eliminate others contacting the buyers with second chance offers, which is another type of fraud.

Then there are the peeps that will cruise listings to find buyers to sucker into buying a coin they supposedly have but don't. The buyer sends the money but never gets the coin and what's interesting, while the initial discussion is done inside of Ebay, the transaction occurred outside of Ebay so you can't get Ebay to help and PayPal sucks at getting a refund from a situation like this.

    Ribbit :)

Personally I think all auctions should all be private and they should remove all item specifics from feedback. I don't think it's anyone's business but your own to know what you're bidding on.

I don't agree with you. Item information on feedback is important to analyze the reputation of the seller. We all know that there are methods to build an "interesting" feedback in a couple of days. e.g.: Buying those 1 USD items with no shipping. And scam people afterwards.

Given the way eBay disguises most of the bidder names on "non-private" auctions, there's quite a narrower difference than there used to be.

I look at the seller's rep before considering whether to bid, whether it's a private auction or not. I would appreciate being more anonymous if it was a high ticket item.

I just bought some Judge Dredd trading cards from a guy over here, it was only after I had paid that I noticed the auction was Private LOL but the cards arrived very promptly very well packed and at cost, so I dont think it makes that much difference.
