I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me how much I should pay for a really banged up $1 education note. Its at a store and I don't have pics. It's completely intact, but it has all imaginable amounts of folds and dirt. What is the maximum I should pay for an intact note?
check eBay completed auctions to see what they have been selling for, just use the Advanced Search and filter results by 'completed auctions'
search in 'coins & paper money' category on eBay 'completed auctions' these key words "1896 note". prices in green are prices realized from successfully completed auctions. it's really hard to estimate value of the OPs note if the dealer hasn't given it a grade and we can't see it to judge for ourselves.
If it is a note that you enjoy and is scarce, then have a debate with yourself over its conditon before buying. Check the note and see if you can hear any crispiness when you lightly shake it by your ear. If not, it is in Fine condition (or worse) and books for about $325. I'm assuming this is the note with George and Martha Washington on the back and History instructing youth on the front?
Just how bad is "really banged up"? For example, here's one being offered for $75; is yours as ugly as that one?
That is one of the links I sent him. It is a note that I would love to get as well but every time I have the money I find something else that I like just a little bit more. I don't think I would be happy with the one posted, I would need to hit the $300-400 range before I could find one I wouldn't be annoyed with later on.
I have one I bought many years ago ,can't remember for how much (I think around $135 )but it is well worn ,no tears but I wanted one badly & it was all I could afford .I haven't regretted it because I still have it after all these years (20 +) & it reminds me of how far my collection has come since, the note is more then likely a fine or very fine.So if the note is not over priced or torn go for it ! Hear is the note :
I'll replace it someday Rusty with a AU or better someday, but will never sell the old banged up one ,because it has sentimental value to me. At the time I was showing everyone like it was a big deal,so this is where I started from on Large size notes.(I was just collecting obsoletes at the time.) For new collectors obsoletes are still a bargain on most common examples compared to Large Size FRN's ,IMHO.
I'm with you Connor. I have a few of them and my first was just a totally worn out one with no tears or holes. Kind of my first love But Large notes can cost so much that my obsolete's have passed them in numbers by lots.
