So I am new to this site and to coins in general. In a very old jar of the 1943 steel pennies and Indian heads, there was this 1960 D silver colored penny in some kind of beveled necklace charm holder. Through Google I just found a 1960 silver penny that apparently sold on eBay for $900. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Scott
Remember that when you find older cents that are plated that years ago nearly every high school across America had shop classes. Auto shop, metal working, etc. Copper cents were the subject of numerous experiments. I have found both gold & chrome plated cents while searching. Many companies also sold plated cents in sets as well as manufacturers of jewelry. However, we really need to see a pic of your coin in order to know what it is.
I appreciate the welcome. I was overwhelmed by alot of the coins that I just happened across, but they seem to be mostly typical American collection types (Indian head cents, buffalo nickels, walking Liberty coins, etc.) I am really excited to learn about all the other odd ones that I have pictures of, but I don't know where to start yet. Some foreign currency too. I will try to find that ebay link in the mean time.
I will venture plated, I'm sure the silver colored one on ebay was an off metal (cent struck on dime) for that distinction you would need to remove the bezel so the entire coin is visible or wight it
Good to have you here wallyiv. You never know what you have among your "typical American collection coins". There are a lot of good dates and varieties in all those series, and you may have some of them. When you get a chance post pics and we'll help you out. Bruce
Thanks everyone you are all great! @ Bruce, I imagine the collection is a pretty typical one, but I really don't know. It's very cool regardless. I don't have any idea about significant dates or mints. Morgan dollars, walking Liberty half dollars, lots of Mercury dimes, Indian head pennies and nickles, 4 oz coin, 8 oz coin.... I really wouldn't know where to start with sending the pictures I have because there would be a lot of them to send.
