I just checked Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports over at Forum Ancient Coins, and I did not find a match. Who is the seller and what is the price, weight and dimensions? I will still check Forgery Network as well. BTW, for future reference you can check these databases as well:

The seller is a guy who sells plants and he is asking $89.

 

First, let me be clear. I do not collect these so I am no expert. It appears to be genuine to me, and having checked the two databases w/o finding a match, I think the coin may be authentic. However, the price makes me cringe as it seems to low for such a coin. If it sounds too good to be true....... Does the seller guarantee it's authenticity and does he accept returns w/o question?

I don't know what to tell you other than to say if no one else responds this is the kind of coin I would take a chance. When is the auction over? Do you have time to wait for others to respond? If not, it's a crap shoot, but one I would probably take. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I'm not too great at telling fakes but.....
i looked at it on ebay and
14.8g (18g in original listing?) either way -- to heavy for a Philip II
27mm-- too wide for a Philip II
he sold it on April 6th but then re listed it, i guess whoever bought it originally didn't want it
-- on the original listing he listed it as a replica

I think it's supposed to be a "Le Rider 491" here is one that sold on CNG

Looked at it again and some other things to add style, especially on the reverse seems off, the legs of the rider never drop that low in the center of the horse in other examples,
the rider is a small boy in the other examples
the horses upper back legs look weaker than other examples,

 

Anyone who buys a $1000 coin for $89 from a guy who sells plants is asking for a weed. It is no bargain even if we can not find a match in the fake databases. If you buy it, send it off for a David Sear certificate and expect the worst.

Man, if this is the case that it was originally listed as a replica and not listed this go-around as a replica, I would cancel the deal before it goes through and I would contact Ebay/Paypal.

 

It looks too good to be true and all the information on the 'posts' make it a replica....even if it is a 'nice' one.

Can anyone privately message me about how to contact David Sears (address etc) as i may have a unique coin or a fake myself---but I can't adequately photograph it as yet, and I have no recollection of buying it. Another 'senior moment' ??? Or perhaps too much beer while watching the pitiful NY Jets in seasons past???? LOL

Yup. In my opinion, listing a known replica and not mentioning it is a replica is highly unethical. In this case he/she relisted the coin after previously relisting it as a replica. One has to believe this was an attempt to not get the sale canceled again and/or fetch a higher sale price. Regardless of the reason, this seller is not being honest. I would not only try to cancel sale and get my money back, I would try to report the seller. You may also want to try and stick it back to them by also keeping the coin - if you can get your money back without sending it back of course.

 

To be honest looks far too good to be true, my opinion a nice replica, I would never buy it, this leads only to disappointment, as many coin collectors would agree.
Probably created in Bulgaria, I see also no age in the coin.

This thread is an example of an inexperienced collector asking for advice, and saving himself the trouble of learning the hard way. I wish more people would take this approach.
