Hello my friends ☺️ I’m checking out this coin 1884-O Morgan and have been finding it difficult to figure if it’s real or fake? The “O” is questionable.. Greatly appreciate your input what do you all think.. seller’s pictures.
I don't know if it's real or fake from those photos, but... Morgans are so readily available, why buy one that you have doubts about?
Looks fake to me and it also appears to be in a PVC flip and cleaned, overall I would avoid this one anyway real or not.
I had a feeling it was fake.. my gut is usually always right. recently I have noticed a lot of fake coins being made making more difficult for people who are wanting to get into collecting.
I'd pass on it! Even if it is not a fake, it appears to have been harshly cleaned. Maybe that is why the seller left it in the plastic and took the photos at an angle in order to hide such things.
websites should not cater to these people who are selling these coins. It has become to easy to create fake coins. I have noticed that there has also been fake coins in slabs as well so please be careful.
Unfortunately, sites like SleazeBay and Etsy are not staffed by experts (in any field!) At best, they are only "order processers". Do you really think that they would know a fake coin from a real one?
it’s more than just Morgan’s now also peace dollars , other nationalities coins etc. unless it’s a legitimate company or someone who has a prestigious representation then be wary. I still like to crack open the slab and weigh and test..just in case. I can always resend to a grading company.
There are several websites advertising that they are selling genuine Morgans at $9.99 each. I am quite confident that desperate people are buying the ten dollar fakes and re-advertising them on Ebay and such. What a terrible black eye on our hobby. But, there is one thing with this one that gives me pause. The typical fake Morgan has a spray on sort of black toning around the devices. That has been the canned finish that the Beijing mint has used to deceive novice collectors.... This one appears to have a blue hued toning. If this one is a fake, the blue hued toning is a new and disturbing step up for the counterfeiters.
I have a few fakes that I purchased to study. You would be surprised what they can do now. They even pass the magnet test. Weight is really close...but still there are a few signs that give it away. The counterfeits are purposely scratched and polished even to fade away some images. If you noticed any darker pot holes type marks is also a sign. Carefully go over the design of the real and fake to make sure it’s real or not.
