I'm looking at buying this coin, but I need some independent verification that it is more likely real than fake. I looked on the fake reports, but I did not find a match. Any help will be appreciated. The seller claims the dimensions as 22mm, 17.09g, 8H:
I don't either necessarily, but the color is "funky". It very well could be the blue background but if it is that seller should change it. TBH, if I saw this on Ebay I would have skipped over it immediately, that color is offputting. Thing about Athenian Tets is they can be very tough to find an exact match. The issues were HUGE, and as such many dies are not published well. I would always rely on someone like Bill for something like this, or an equivalently experienced dealer.
Thanks to all. I did pass over it when I first saw it, but I went back to it. I agree and that is why I posted this thread. I know there are others on CT much more knowledgeable than I. Ardatirion, Dionysus (Batman), Doug and Martin come to mind immediately.
The color is a bit odd, but that appears to be the result of the photography. The wear and banker's marks are what most strongly suggest authenticity.
This photo has the blue color turned-down a bit. I'd like to learn the sale price of this coin when it is known.
I got out sniped. Last second bid of $256 which I believe to be a great price. Aw well, that's what I get for being cheap.
I knew I recognized that particular arrangement of banker's marks: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=233276 Looks like the seller lost money on the deal.
Too bad Dionysos. I would have liked to see it in my hands, but if not there, yours would have suited me just fine. I got out sniped by just a small margin. I wonder how high I would have had to bid to have bid more than the winner. I guess I'll never know.
I tried to snipe the thing with a "relatively" low bid. If I saw this thread before I would have refrained (but apparently it did not change anything)
Man, if ya can't even trust Batman, then who can ya trust, eh Bing? => the citizens of Coin World are doomed!!! ahahaha => just jokes, Dionysos => you're the King of coin ethics!! (cheers Pierre!!)
I didn't know if any of you lot wanted to view this photo I took of an Athenian Owl Coin next to a modern Greek Euro depicting the same coin.
