Hi All, Can anyone tell me if this 1866 Shield Nickel is a re-punched date ? It appears to me that the last 6 is misaligned.

I can't answer your question but what a beauty of a coin. There are people on this site that will give you an answer in no time

I cannot tell if it's a well-placed hit, an artifact of the corrosion, or if, perhaps, there is more to it. I forget his username, but Howard the Sheild Nickel guy is an member here, and would be the only person whose opinion I would take as fact on this one, at least without their posting independent proof. There have been a few of these threads where it was claimed the coin in question was an RPD yet was later proven to be otherwise.

    Good luck to you, sir.

    Edit: I found it.... @howards

Numbers back in those days were often put on one at a time.
Don't know if that's the case here BUT, if so, alignment problems often occur.
In fact that's often a diagnostic for a die variety.

Your photo isn't detailed enough for me to say whether it may or may not have a minor RPD. But I can tell you the appearance of the second 6 is entirely normal for the date.

Shield nickel dates were always punched with a 4-digit gang punch.
