Hello, I found this coin in a lot and I was wondering its worth. I know Septimius Severus is common in Denarius but this type has only 2 in numismatics.org (one in MANTIS and the other in the British museum). I also searched ACsearch and found only one, that went unsold by CNG. RIC IV Septimius Severus 390 Thanks for your help, Thomas,
The experts here on eastern mint Severan denarii are @maridvnvm and @dougsmit . Hopefully, they'll drop by to give you their thoughts. My guess is that they each have a copy of this "Emesa" mint example.
Here's another Severus denarius featuring Neptune... Septimius Severus, A.R. Denarius, Rome mint, 210 C.E. 3.3 grams, 19.1 mm Obverse: Laureate head right, SEVERVS PIVS AVG Reverse: PMTRP XVIII COS III PP Neptune standing left, nude but for cloak over left shoulder and right arm, right foot on rock, right arm resting on right knee, trident vertical behind in left hand. ex @Sallent collection...
I can agree with most of that apart from the INVICTO IMP I INVICTO IMP is a very common variety that does come with some less common sub-types. See here for some of them: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/common-yet-rare.348507/#post-3775336 I think that yours is the standard type. I have at least 5 of these in my collection.
As coins from 'Emesa' go, this is a common one. I currently have about 20 from the days I was hoping to work on a die study. There are way too many for that to work at my level so I started getting rid of some and now only buy ones which have something 'different'. If you look at these ten, you will find 4 common and 6 more scarce but to most people there are only one class (boring?). The fact you found few is a reflection on your searching methods more than the coins.
