Here is one of my newest coins from a buying spree I did a few weeks back. I have long wanted these for some time I used to watch wrestling for nearly 30 years. I ended up acquiring this at the opening bid. Not sure why there was no "wrestling" for it. It had noticed it was a rare type I couldn't find a single example anywhere online & thanks to @Valentinian he was able to find info on it. It's a pretty rare variety & that is due to the "head-on column. As anyone else seen this type before and if so, who's head is on the column? Post your wrestlers or triskeles. PAMPHYLIA, Aspendos (420 - 400 B.C.) AR Stater O: Two wrestlers grappling. R: Slinger in throwing stance right; triskeles to left; head-on-a-column. 10.72g 21mm SNG von Aulock #4510 (Same Dies)
Very cool, @Mat Getting it at the opening bid ... is cooler I also bought one recently and I posted it, you also wrote on that thread. Not at the opening bid but still happy with the price I was not able to identify the countermark on my coin. Like yours, it is from Tekin 2 series (position of the legs of the wrestlers) https://www.persee.fr/doc/anatv_1013-9559_2000_act_12_1_956 While searching for a similar example to mine, to identify the countermark, I have seen a lot of Aspendors staters but nothing like yours with head on the column.
Nice find, Mat! Interesting secondary device. I don't know whose head is on that column. Is there a historical figure associated with Aspendos or someone revered or esteemed by wrestlers?
Cool type of a favorite coin! I do by recall seeing one like it before. I believe it's a herm sans phallus. Making the head, more than likely, Hermes. Here's mine:
