I was given the following coin. It is a 1942-P silver nickel that has something horribly wrong with it. It may have been done in the mint but i'm thinking negative on that. Anyone with any opinions i would love to hear them. Been messing with this thing for months now. :smile http://tylerpenlandweatherservice.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=7895927
I'm going with post-mint damage. Looks like somebody beat it with a hammer. That would explain the deformity, as well as the lack of detail on the one side.
Thats what i thought but the only thing that threw me off was the fact that on the reverse the rim sticks out on has all the detail there. Its hard to tell from the picture, but the rim is about twice as thick on the reverse than normal. I think it may be post-mint but it wasn't a hammer. then both sides would be worn.
It is post mint damage. Post mint damage can almost always be detected but the cause is not so easily determined as there are an infinite number of ways for coins to be damaged.
