Ian responded to one of the threads on a link in my last post.Another person also chimed in and said HE had the same jeton. This is raising a lot of red flags in my mind. How is it that 4 people all have the same piece, same date, same design if they're REALLY from 1648?The odds are overwhelmingly against it.
This reminds me of all the people that come on here with those "Reader's Digest" Austrian ducats.

Terry. Why don't you just post the images onto a webpage and let us know the address when you have done so.

To be brutal, I wouldn't accept a file sent to me via email from a total stranger. There's no telling what kind of trojan or `backdoor' type program it could sneakily contain. I'm sure that you'll appreciate a common sense caution to these things.

Besides, you've managed to find your way here, so you are fairly technically competent....so get your images onto a webpage so we can all see them. When you do, i'm pretty sure we can resolve your `mystery' on this item. It's definitely not a coin but i'm not going to say any more until I actually see what it is you are talking about.

You also need to let us know:

    a) the metal it is made from (silver, copper , brass?)
    b) the diameter in mm's
    c) whether the edge is plain or reeded. If it is plain, does it have any markings indented into it?

By the way, where are you based, what is your collecting interests.....and apart from this mystery item, what else do you have in your collection?

    Ian,
That brings up another point.Of the three people that have written in asking for information on this piece, all of them have given a full listing of the rather long inscription and NONE have been able to provide a photo of any kind. This strikes me as rather odd.Person #1,loulouck said he didn't have any pictures and would provide some later and was never heard from again,#2 mandi said she would get back with photos but never did.
terrycoin, sorry,if your question is legitimate. It is extremely easy to take a 135mb photo and reduce it to 100 and I would love it if you can prove me wrong. Please do.

I'd be delighted to find otherwise, but as with the others I suspect that you will never see any response from the original poster. ;)

Solidarity among fellow paranoid conspiracy theorists,it's a beautiful thing.
I just hope that nobody feels I'm beating up on newbies and scaring them away from this forum as this is not my intention.
I have to go now because the CIA is listening in to my thoughts and I'm out of aluminum foil.;)

Well, they are all signing on from different IPs, but the interesting thing is that all three are using cable modems.

Whois lookups on the hostnames and IP's can usually resolve any questions about it being the same computer or the same person logging into different computers in the same city.

    worth searching?

I have posted about this coin before and was wondering if any one had any information about it yet.I still can't figure out my digital camera as far as size goes:headbang: so therefore I have provided you with this link directly to my website, which I have inserted a picture of the coin,on my home page.I hope you don't mind taking a moment to see the coin. The description is as follows:it is fairly heavy for a coin the size of 2.3cm and 2mm thick. It is shiny but almost blackish dirty tone.It is inscripted 1648 LVD XIIII DG FR ET NAV REX .I know it is a child king picture of LOUIS 14 .On the back(or front:goofer:)is a ship with no inscription except for a picture of the ship.I'm not sure if it's silver and the outside edge of coin/jeton is ridges all around.check ou the pic.click here .http://www.teachmemum.zoomshare.com

Since you have private messaging turned off and refuse to accept e-mails from the forum, the only way to communicate with you is a public posting. One subject is entitled to one thread. Please do not post multiple threads on the same topic.

As mentioned in a prior post in this thread, the same jeton has been discussed in this thread and in great detail in this one.

After reading those threads, if you still have questions feel free to post them in this thread.

To be honest, I haven't seen any jeton from that era that looks like your one.

The only jeton i've seen with a ship on the reverse remotely similar to yours was on a jeton issued by the Chamber of Commerce for La Rochelle in the 1750's. Usually the ships on that series are sailing to the left. However I don't think they had ships that looked like that in 1648. The bust of the king also looks too crude for any official issue of a jeton.

I could be wrong but it doesn't look like silver to me but its hard to be 100% certain based on the images you have. To my eye it appears to be a fairly modern creation, but I haven't a clue as to why someone would want to create it in the first place excepting as possibly toy money or as part of a series on french kings or similar.

Sorry I can't be more helpful on this occasion.

I strongly suspect that your item has no significant value in either historic or monetary terms. However, your best bet is to take it to a jeweller and ask them to tell you what metal it is made from. It doesn't look to me to be silver, but in the absence of a better set of images I would not like to say for definite. Let us know how you get on with that.

Also get a measure across the diameter (in mm's) and a weight (in grams). If you can get better images, then so much the better. Maybe you have a friend with a scanner who can take scans and post them on your web page? We need higher definition `in focus' images to help determine if the item is as old as it claims.... or was made a few years ago. To me, the odds are well stacked against it being from 1648 but better images would enable more certainty one way or the other.

Out of interest can you remember how / where you came across it?

I'd bet the bank it's a modern reproduction/promotional giveaway, based on the photo.I could be wrong but I don't think so.This would also explain why so many of them seem to turn up.
At least you produced a pic, unlike the others.Thank you!

I did a bit of searching and finally found this thread on a French language numismatic forum. The guy has the same piece as you and basically is told that it is a modern piece made in Canada.Several people also write in saying they also have the same piece...with photos.I think this pretty much solves the mystery. As an aside, there is a link to THIS forum and Mandi's thread..go figure!

Excellent sleuthing my dear Watson! However, according to the thread....the explanation given is `probably' made in Canada. No definite attribution though.

Like one of the writers in that thread, to my mind it is most likely the french equivalent of a promotional piece similar to the replica 1752 Austrian ducat used to great effect by Readers Digest. We all know how many times we have cringed when we see that particular item appear yet again in a `what is it / what is it worth' thread :rolling:
