He is an ebay auction for an 1831 Half Cent in BU condition. This is a five figure coin, but unfortunately, it looks counterfeit to me. The rim does not look right, and there are a few incriminating blobs on the surface. However, I am not a early copper expert. Any other opinions?? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270098368155&fromMakeTrack=true
Definitely a counterfeit! For a coin with such great details, the rim is an obvious giveaway. Also, note the rub (bluish looking areas) on Miss Liberty's hair just below the "L" and "B" in LIBERTY where the true metal content of the coin shows through. I had a Counterfeit Kentucky Cent that had the same type areas of bluish showing through the Copper coating. I am not sure of the makeup but the coin planchet is probably some Pewter and other metal(s) composite and is Copper coated. Frank
My gut feeling is it is counterfeit. Not to educated on early cents though. Hope it doesn't go to high. Phoenix
