Railroad rim definition

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by peachymargarita, Jul 29, 2006.

  1. I have always thought railroad rims to be partial collar strikes. However I am seeing more coins that look like this being called railroad rims. What's the deal? Assuming my original thought is correct, what would this coin labeled as?

    Happy hunting,

They are one and the same - just different names. Click Here

The coin pictured is not a partial collar (or railroad rim, which is another name for the same error.) That is a coin showing evidence of a collar clash. The die was far enough misaligned that the part of the die that creates the rim struck the edge of the collar and it left a clash mark showing the top of the reeds. Then when the die struck the coin, you see the top edge of the reeds where the edge meets the rim, but you also see them again on the flat part of the rim from the clash mark.

  5. That's the answer I needed Conder. I knew this coin was a misaligned die, I just could not figure out how the reeding got on the face of the rim. Thanks for your input.
